Those are really good thought-provoking questions.
In a situation like this, where the world's largest retailer (which is led by the world's wealthiest person) appears to be expressing a deep and serious interest in locating their second world headquarters (and the $5 billion of investment and the 50,000 high-paying jobs that will come with it) in our city/state, winning really is winning.
We are talking about an event that many are saying seriously appears to have the potential to have the transformative impact on Atlanta's economic prospects that happened after past transformative events like when Delta Airlines moved their corporate headquarters and their international air hub to Atlanta back in 1941 or after when Atlanta was named as the host of the 1996 Summer Olympics in 1990.
The prospect of landing Amazon's second headquarters is such a massive deal for many because it would not just be Amazon's headquarters alone that a city/metro would be attracting but also likely numerous other very high-profile economic development opportunities on an international scale that would come after being named the site of Amazon HQ2.
This has the serious potential to be a highly-transformative, game-changing event when it comes to economic development in the technological age... Which is why this process is such a massive deal for so many.

Whether you're a liberal who thinks government should actively do things and solve problems, or a conservative who thinks the opposite, every English-official-language related proposal I've ever seen at any level, has been neither of those things.
Sen. McKoon wrote this:
Time to make English the official language of Georgia | The Telegraph
Whatever it's in the guise of (saving a tiny bit of taxpayer money I guess), what it actually is, is bigotry/racism, and other nefarious purposes. It's "we speak English here- go back to your country if you speak any other language". Etc. And it would make it very difficult for non-English speakers to vote, since they would not have the ballot be in their language. It would make it more difficult for non-English speakers to receive their constitutional due process in official state courts, etc.
America doesn't have an official language, and it doesn't need one. There are historical and all kinds of really good reasons for that.
Georgia doesn't need anything of the sort either. It wouldn't fix or solve anything, and would cause problems and harm people. It's just selfish, thoughtless bigotry. Sickening. But very typical and expected from politicians like McKoon.

Seems like legislation intended to derail Amazon coming here because of fear of their progressive values is pretty on topic.

https://www.wabe.org/developer-prese...ntown-atlanta/ Chris Sciarrone of Perkins + Will, who worked on the project’s design, said the current proposal would cap the Gulch with a whole new street grid and a 26-acre mixed-use project.
“The vision is for this to be a really vibrant urban environment that’s walkable and has greenspace and is reconnected back into the city,” said
The development would include mainly office space — 9 million square feet. Another roughly 2 million square feet would be dedicated to shops and apartments.

You can count on them doing their best not to make English Georgia's official language now or getting some major push back even from republicans due to the possible loss of the Amazon bid, they don't play when it comes to money buddy, that throws all the you know what views out the door. The sad part is even if they don't make these crazy changes like making English the official language of Georgia to get Amazon or even the above Noncitizens drivers license bill, the people have already lost because the final out come was all for money, profit and to boost growth, not for the people...

Well, Minnesota had Michelle Bachmann, and it's considered a liberal state (although it almost voted for Trump). Unless there's any indication these laws will actually pass, it's just noise. Similar legislation has been shut down by Georgia Republican leadership.
Ga. Republicans stick to election-year legislative agenda, scuttle more controversial bills
Quote:
Deal and other top Republicans have spoken about the need to reach out to minorities and share the GOP’s message.
That could have taken a hit if lawmakers had approved a Senate resolution proposing a constitutional amendment to declare English as the official language of Georgia and requiring driver’s license exams to be given only in English.
Currently, the on-the-road driving test and the signs section of the written test are conducted in English only, but the written road rules section is offered in English and 11 other languages. That measure did not make it to a vote on the Senate floor.

Amazon could turn a vast swath of suburbia into a walkable, transit-connected, mixed-use, and architecturally interesting satellite city. Such a project would prove transformational for whatever region it’s in. But it would also become a template—and an impetus—for many more such projects around the country. As the mother of all suburban retrofits, HQ2 could help rewrite land-use patterns that are environmentally wasteful and experientially banal. It could model a new kind of suburbia—one that younger Americans will actively want to live in, rather than just settle for.
Quote:
Why would Amazon choose to move to the suburbs? For the same reason so many Americans do: It needs more space (8 million square feet, to be precise). Land is usually cheaper on the outskirts, and the very looseness of sprawl makes large-scale infill pragmatic. Oversized parking lots and strip malls built for obsolescence are a dime a dozen: Few people would be sorry to see them replaced with buildings, streets, and parks designed to last. Many suburbs also have lower housing costs than the cities they border, and they’re resistant to the sudden spikes in “hotness” that lead to gentrification.
Quote:
In Doraville, Georgia, northeast of Atlanta, a plan is already under way to build a “mini-city” called Assembly on the 165-acre site of a defunct General Motors plant near a MARTA stop. An urban-style HQ2 here could significantly boost daily ridership on MARTA—lending momentum to that system’s hopes of expansion—and would promote transit-oriented development in a region that’s not known for it.
