Cumberland Island has some marvelous campsites (facilities and non-facilities), but you have to reserve them way in advance.

For those considering Tybee>>
//www.city-data.com/forum/savan...ee-island.html

You can find other threads in the Savannah forum about Tybee--do an 'Advanced' Search.

I like it better in the 'off season' which is probably Sept to February/March.

*You cannot walk a dog on this beach, Tybee. You will be fined/taken to court. That is something of an issue for me now. Even though it is 'closer' I might choose another beach.
Much the same on several GA beaches. IIRC--there are specific hours when dogs are allowed on the beach at St. Simons. They are more lenient about dogs on the beach at Hilton Head, SC--if that is a factor.

I enjoy beaches in general.

I don't know about cheap, considering the price of gas and the distance... if you're looking for 'pristine' pretty blue beaches and white sand, then you need to go to the Florida gulf coast.

The Georgia coast is cool for marshes and such, but the actual beaches aren't "picturesque" - reminds me a lot of lake water.

I'd leave very early in the morning and either go to Hilton Head, SC or the Destin / Watercolor / Seagrove area of Florida and use public parking. Public parking may be a bit of a hassle but will save you money (For Hilton Head, go to Forest Beach, and for Destin/Seagrove, public parking is along 30A. Both are about the same distance (Hilton Head is a little closer and very nice) and if you leave very early, you can do it all in one day, thus saving you money.

Jekyll does have a better beach. We usually go over for a day while we are down. We stay on St. Simons because we have friends that live there that we get together with in the evening. Plus there is a little more to do on the island, like shopping and restaurants. My husband does love the fishing off the beach on Jekyll!
