We may relocate to the Atlanta area - work situation is combination of work from home/commute to airport/commute to Midtown. Looking for place with great public schools, family friendly - two young children, elementary school aged. Beginning search in Marietta, Alpharetta, Kennesaw - worried about Midtown/Airport commutes, but want safe, family friendly, good schools. Understand no worries for good schools/family friendly in Alpharetta/Kennesaw, but curious about other areas that could be slightly better for commuting like Marietta. Coming from Northeast in an area with exceptional schools, but high cost of living and long, cold winters - think the hot/humid summers will be an adjustment but worth the trade. Any advice/comments much appreciated!! Budget 500K max. Prefer low 400K.

Based on your commuting needs (Midtown and Airport) and other desires listed, I recommend East Cobb (or maybe Sandy Springs).

Peachtree City is another potential option, but I am not sure I can speak about the commute to Midtown (the commute to the Airport and Downtown from Peachtree City is very reasonable).

Marietta is a great choice. Closer to 75 and further south the easier the commute. Lots of options, from east Cobb to city of Marietta to others.

How great do you want the schools to be? Best of the best? Very good?

Do you only care about elementary or all the way through high school? I ask because there are areas even closer with great elementary but quality goes down for ms and hs.

East Cobb would be my choice.
Sandy springs is a good area, but a little pricier . You will get more home at your price point in east Cobb. Also the schools are very good there.

I agree with the East Cobb recommendations because of the schools; it would be convenient not to live too far from the 75 as you would be so much nearer to Atlanta. A lot of young people go to Atlanta to party. I don't know too many people who party in the suburbs. To be honest...I don't want to be around those people (my life experiences, aye).

Nothing wrong with any of the cities you have in your list, but East Cobb will provide a better commute, and has great schools.
