During the twenty two years I was gone from Atlanta, I lived in Rome and Chattanooga. The rail idea has been bounced around several times. At one point, the only planned stop was at Dalton (to serve the carpet industry). I wouldn't count on anything anytime soon. I have never heard of anything going through Rome, as it is off the main 75 corridor.

I meant to second Atlanta Greg on downtown Chattanooga, especially since I have lived there. Fun, safe, friendly and clean.

In Florida they were considering a high-speed rail from Miami to Orlando. That was rejected, but at least it makes a bit more sense as tourist revenue would be sufficient (going from Miami to Disney/Universal, etc. and vice-versa). But, Chatanooga? Maybe Savannah, so Atlantans can go to the beach.
I would so use a high speed rail to Savannah...I hate that drive.
