What do you guys think of Sam Massell and his push to make Buckhead this more exclusive? Businesses that are not officially within the Buckhead boarders (as set by ARC) who use Buckhead in their name must change their name. Read this article it is very interesting.

Buckhead group gets territorial about area's cachet *| ajc.com

From a marketing standpoint I can see why they would want this. But why would using the name in businesses outside the area hinder the "Buckhead brand"?

It will be interesting to see how this pans out, because it could open the gate for a couple of more areas to do something similar.

Vinings is also a very desirable area to live and have a business, but these days you can find home communities that use the name "Vinings" in them that are well outside the Vinings area.

I see nothing wrong with Buckhead "leaders" being upset at folks outside the area using the area name. Through the years many areas of Atlanta have had their ups and downs, and with crime in some areas on the rise (or at least the perception of it), Buckhead still has a ring of safety and an upscale tag to it's name. People who are just moving to the area might have easily heard (via here or other sources) that Buckhead is the place to live, but when they see businesses or communities with the Buckhead "brand" on them miles away from the actual Buckhead area, it might be misleading and confusing. I say go for it, Sammy. I think they should just keep pushing to break Buckhead away from the City and become their own town.

The thing I could understand being upset about is some of the unincorporated places like say unincorporated Decatur or unincorporated Duluth, etc. using the name Decatur or Duluth when in reality they are nothing like the actual city and bring the actual cities name down when it comes to crime, schools, etc. I have noticed papers make an effort to say something like 'a shooting happened in the an unincorporated area near....' But to say the lady who has a business called Buckhead Reporting Services and is located in Suwanee needs to change their name just seems odd to me. Businesses with city names on them move all the time but keep their name for branding reasons. I don't think someone in Suwanee is trying to fool someone into think that they are located in Buckhead.

Maybe the actual town of Buckhead will come after the so called legitimate businesses in Buckhead(Atlanta) and sue for defamation of character with the Buckhead coalition being snotty and thinking there name is to good for anyone to use giving some people a bad taste for Buckhead by confusing the two becasue of the names, they should consider that some people's last name could be Buckhead and the business could be named after their name.

How perfectly absurd. Buckhead isn't the only community that has its' name appropriated by businesses outside its' limits. I've seen the same thing done to Vinings, Druid Hills, Brookhaven, Decatur, Stone Mountain et al.
They ought to be pleased that the name carries such cachet and leave it at that.

That is the stupidest thing I have heard in a long time and legally it is going nowhere. Here is why- the "Buckhead" Massell is talking about is not an incorporated city. It is merely a neighbourhood of Atlanta Georgia. There IS an actual CITY in Georgia named Buckhead in Morgan County. If anybody has an exclusive right to that name, it would be them and not "north Atlanta".
Secondly a business does not have to have a presence in a city to use its name. Many businesses use names of places that they have no affiliation with. Look in the Atlanta Yellow Pages for the name "Chicago" and you will see at least a dozen businesses here that use the name of that city. The "New York" Jets play in New Jersey.
It would be funny as hell if the REAL Buckhead GA sued the Buckhead Coalition to stop using the name!

So wait, i can't call my business appalachian business and sales because i am not in the middle of the mountain?!

Some people are actively working on destroying this great state and it's sad if they are allowed to do so.

Honestly, When I hear the name Buckhead it conjures about as many negation associations as it does positive. "Exclusiveness" is a synonym for snobbiness in those parts with all the rats running the conspicuous consumption race up there. It's no longer the nice community full of tasteful, genteel estates it was. Now it's an obnoxiously pretentious "brand" that proves that money does not always equal taste and that tackiness is popular amongst the noveau riche.

Why is Massell going after small business owners who are not likely to threaten B'head businesses in any way? I think this is going to backfire on him. Perhaps he's bitter about the Streets of Buckhead implosion. Karma is not a nice lady.

I agree. Runaway development and the Deliverance-style bending over of this community to the Corporation screwed that pooch long ago.

I could say more, but there are people like James Howard Kunstler who said enough already.
