Default Day Trip idea: Greenville,SC or Savannah

So me, my Wife and little one will be in Atlanta for 5 days in the middle of August. One of those days we wanted to visit Greenville,SC or Savannah just for a day trip. I initially wanted to go to Greenville because it’s a shorter distance but Savannah as a city interest me more.

So which city would be worth a day trip? Thanks in advance.

P.S. Just in case someone throws this in here we’re not interested in going to Chattanooga AGAIN. We use to live in Atlanta and have already been to Chattanooga. Wonderful city but wanted to visit somewhere different.

I think savanah is the better choice, but unless you are ok with a long drive at the end of the day, maybe an overnight stay?

Greenville seems just a little less hot and miserable to me during the summer.

Depending how old the child is... I would think splashing around in Reedy Falls would be more interesting than history and bars.

I get that, but if all you’re going to do is entertain the kid with a water park, why drive all the way to Greenville. They could stay local and get that.

Savannah. Greenville's a greater COVID hotspot at the moment.

I don't think Greenville has that much for tourists, especially compared to Savannah...tbh.

I think you will get far more out of Savannah. It is very unique, has a great deal of history, and there is much to explore there from tourist traps to interesting parks to walk in and great places to eat. I would definitely go that route myself. If you haven't been there, it is a must-do.

If your need a shorter drive or were just more interested in mountain settings, rather than the coastal plain, I would drive up I-985/US23 and go to any combination of the following places:

-Helen
-Dillard
-Cherokee NC
-Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg
-Smokey Mountain National Park
-Asheville NC
-Franklin NC

It is the drive itself that turns scenic and many of these towns are good for a short stop and a unique meal and short-term tourist amenities. Also, consider a short drive on the Blue Ridge Pkwy that goes between Cherokee and Asheville. Greenville, SC is still in the Piedmont...similar to Atlanta.

Yea Savannah is much more geared towards tourists. I know you're from Houston you understand humidity but mid August in Savannah just doesn't sound appealing unless you're on the beach on Tybee Island or something. Plus it's farther away.
But there is more to do I'd say.

Lived in Savannah & would avoid the city during the summer, 95 everyday & 80% humidity. Going to the beach wasn't pleasant at times due to the heat, I would only go in the evening.
