You wish, the current leadership in the city and at APS are not going to allow it

How can they stop it? Not allow the children of legitimate tax payers attend their local public schools? The only way to "stop" this would be for the supposedly "open minded" parents to refuse to send their children to the public schools where they live. Oh wait, that is EXACTLY what is happening all across Atlanta's east side neighborhoods. True, parents seem to be choosing Mary Lin, Morningside, and Springdale Park for elementary school, but not Toomer and Burgess-Peterson (those schools should REALLY be more "balanced" when one looks at their surrounding neighborhoods) We won't even go into how Grady and Jackson High Schools really do not reflect their attendance zones, either.

Organically, Grady High (which seems to be pretty stable for the last twenty years or so at about 1/3 White) and Jackson High should not be "lily white" by any means, but they should be A LOT more racially balanced. (Perhaps more like the student body of Sutton Middle School).

I really think that parents of all ethnic groups in the Grady and Jackson clusters should unite and agree to stay in in the cluster's schools k-12 and THEN work collectively to ensure that the schools BECOME and REMAIN the schools that they desire for their children. It is fine to claim all of these "progressive stances" on issues, but disingenuous not to implement them.

Rezoning and redistricting to make sure you don't lose those sweet, sweet Title 1 federal dollars.

I don't know that I can say that has happened with APS recently, but it's certainly something they are aware of.

It was discussed when they were looking at rezoning Inman MS. They will definitely make sure they have a sufficient % of free lunch students to keep those federal dollars rolling in those schools that already have it.

Also if these are considered the best schools, don't underestimate a parents desire to obtain the best education for their children, contrary to what the perceptions say. There are many kids that are at North Atlanta and Grady that are not officially supposed to be there but live with relatives and friends in the zone. Some are there with the help of the various teachers and coaches at the school chasing talent, everyone loves a winner.

I think there will continue to be a lot of self segregation all over for the foreseeable future. As long as people are free to get up and move to where they want to live, they are going to do that. Not stating my opinion on the matter, just a fact.

If you live in the City of Atlanta, you can technically go any APS school through the school choice law, as long as the school has space available for kids outside the school zone.

True, but several schools, including Inman and Grady are "full".

That’s interesting as my brother lives in morningside ES/Grady Hs district and not a single person on his street uses the public HS. They attend paideia, pace, Montessori, etc...
