Considering a job at the Fort McPherson VA Clinic, but a friend wants me to room with her in Smyrna (Towns of Crescent Park). I need an unbiased opinion on the commute. My work hours would be 7:30 am-4:00 pm Mon-Fri. Google says 22-35 minutes, which is good, but I'm skeptical. Thanks in advance.

That time estimate from Google Maps is pretty much right on.

A commute from Smyrna to Fort McPherson is definitely viable within the 22-35 minute time frame that Google Maps estimates during morning rush hour.

Just make sure to use the I-285 Perimeter "West Wall" southbound down to GA 154-166 Langford Parkway eastbound to US Highway 29 northbound during your morning rush hour commute between Smyrna and Fort McPherson (and vice-versa during your afternoon/evening rush hour commute between Fort McPherson and Smyrna).

...And make sure to stay off of and away from I-75 Northwest and the severely-congested I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector through Midtown and Downtown Atlanta and you will be fine for the most part.

Your commute will be okay in the mornings if you stick to 285 because you’ll be going against traffic. The afternoons will be hit or miss, especially as you get close to the 75/285 interchange, but on the bad days you could get off at Paces Ferry then take Cumberland home.

You will going on a reverse commute meaning the traffic is going to be flowing in the opposite direction assuming you are getting on on 285. Just take 285 to Langford Parkway. It will take you 23 mins

Thanks for the responses. I wanted to believe Google map, but wasn't sure about I-285. I've read so many horror stories about Atlanta traffic. I like keeping everything within a 30-40 radius and rooming with my friend may indeed work. Cheers!

The west side of 285 is generally pretty good, except that with all of the construction going on between S. Cobb and I-75, things get a little hairy. It can also tend to back up quite a bit going northbound before the I-20 intersection. Because this is Atlanta, and even a one-lane exit can bring four lanes to a crawl.

An alternative route, depending on where in Smyrna you are looking, is to take S. Atlanta Rd into Atlanta where it turns into Marietta Blvd., then Marietta Street, to Joesph E. Lowery, then down Lee Street. I live on this route near the border between Cobb and Atlanta, and use it frequently. I work by Lakewood Amphitheater, which is close to Fort McPherson. Even at busy rush hour times, it usually takes me anywhere from 18-25 minutes to do the 11.5-14.5 mile commute. It's only 5-10 minutes into Smyrna for me.

Thanks guys for the different routes. How is the commute from the East Marietta area (30062)? We're coming up later this month and I'd like to know where to focus the search. Is the commute from E. Marietta to Fort McPherson VA clinic terrible?

Add about 20-45 minutes to what the commute would be each way between Smyrna and Fort McPherson.

That would not be the most fun commute. Maybe better than going downtown or midtown, but still not great.
