Within ten miles of any given area means at least every 20 miles. A 4-lane divided highway every 20 miles is hardly a terrible idea, especially in a state which deals with hurricane evacuations. That's not going to kill "walkability" and "vibrant urban fabrics".

Now over 80,000 miles are aging and developing problems that are a challenge to maintain.
This is exactly why overbuilding a rural road network is not a good idea.

I know the city by heart so I don't really look at the directional signs anymore but when we were learning Atlanta, it did get quite confusing...

but then again..when we went to Athens for the first time, my mom and dad thought Loop 10 outer and Loop 10 inner were two different highways.
Maybe not, but they need to be much better about where the NS/EW changes happen. IMO they should be at 75 (NW), 85 (both ends), and 20 (SE). My favorite is how 285 is signed as "south" going SE from Buford Highway, but coming from I-85 both ways that exit is signed as going to 285 east!

I think that is because I-85 is North-South control road. It would be odd having 2 N-S roads intersect each other.

Yes , but I wonder if it has to do with I-85 being the control road for I-285.

The beauty of a circle is if you go the wrong way, you will eventually return to your entry point. The danger is never leaving. Ask Pasqual Perez.

Well, the connector does alittle something different than intersecting, they converge into one super highway and run the same direction and temporarily go to the same destination (until they diverge).

Also both Interstates (I-75 and I-85) are confined to the rules of Interstate labeling (odd digits always go north and south, even digits always go east and west) thus, they cannot change the directional on I-75 or I-85 (as in reality I-85 does alot of east / west travel.)

on I-285 the rules are different because its a 3 digit interstate and is not confined to the same directional rules.

While on that subject though, one thing I have always wondered is why they chose I-85 to go to Montgomery instead of I-75, and I-85 should technically go to Florida, all the way to Miami if the system wasn't interrupted (which literally happens right outside of downtown just north of the Airport where I-85 goes Southwest and comes before I-75.)

As for I-285, I think they do this to keep things simple because both I-75 and I-85 meet I-285 in the middle of a major directional change. I-85 would literally say [I-285 West: Chattanooga / Birmingham -- i-285 South: Augusta, Macon]

Where as the directionals would West and South instead of east and west...combined with I-85 also heading south (and that one may confuse I-85 with I-285 if they're both going South) I think I can see that being an issue as to why they label I-285 as East and West when it isnt.
