Whatever happened to the giant ants at the airport? Why are there so many parking lots downtown? How will climate change affect the city? Did Baton Bob retire?

I think it's because the property tax structure is set up to charge more for a lot with a building (even if it's empty) than for a vacant lot.

So it's cheaper just to tear the place down, plus you can park more cars there.

Actually, IIRC, its less than and more that Georgia has a law that requires so many parking spots for square footage of a building.

Something weird like that at least.

Hey, Baton Bob didn't retire, he just moved to Tucker and it's harder to spot him. He is still available for public appearances.

Yes, city zoning codes generally do have parking minimums and that's a major factor.

However, I was thinking more specifically about the surface parking lots in south downtown. Several of those exist because it was cheaper to demolish the old buildings.

Many of the pay-to-park lots are owned, not just operated, by parking lot operators. They make a tidty profit operating the lot and then, one day when they can get the price they want, they sell the lots to developers and make a fortune. Good business model. Used to be friends with one of those guys, and he was rolling in the dough.

Definitely a huge and profitable business! Some of those properties have been family owned for a long time.

Kind of why self storage is saturating the area. The business costs almost nothing to run, yet rakes in tens or hundreds of thousands a month in income. I can think of an area just north of me where there are no fewer than eight within five minutes of each other, with a new one being built. Some of them are the same company just a few blocks apart.
