Considering bikes are more dangerous to pedestrians than these scooters, it's a bit much. There is a legal standard of "arbitrary and capricious" that I don't think has been tested for motorized vehicles on paved trails such as these. The intent of the regulation is to keep very fast [gas-powered] vehicles away from the "slower" pedestrians and bikes. Now that electric scooters have proliferated, what's the difference between them and bikes, other than the power source?

I'd say they're a lot safer for the rider.

If you see that a crash is about to happen, they look like it's pretty easy to bail and jump off of them without getting that hurt. Bikes, not so easy to do. And if you're a pedestrian who gets struck by a rogue scooter, you'll probably get a lot less hurt than if a bike slams into you.

They seem quite a bit safer to me.

They are. A friend of mine rode one to dinner with us tonight. Showed us the map on his phone, and they were literally everywhere within a couple miles of downtown and midtown.

The Bird sounds good, but if we allow those, how will you prevent the near 30mph Uberscoot and suchlike from using the Beltline?

Or prevent people like me ...

So, the Bird is not the word on the Beltline?

Speed limits. It's the speed that's a problem, not the motor. We don't say a car can only have an engine of a certain displacement, horsepower, torque, etc., do we? No, we regulate the speed you travel, and for good reason.

I'm saying stick with "no motorized vehicles".
My point was in response to people saying the Bird scooters would be OK because they only go 15mph.
If 30 or 40+ mph scooters exist, then people will be running those on the Beltline. And then we'll see kids racing each other at top speed.

There's no point in having a speed limit on the Beltline. Speed limits mean nothing to people. Motorized vehicles aren't even supposed to be there at all presently, and yet there they are.
How would it be enforced? Police on motorcycles? Police with nets to throw over the speeders? Require license plates for speed cameras to record?
