From the way the individual's post was written, it seemed as though they were implying that "America" (as in official elected by taxpaying citizens) can force Greyhound to clean up their bus stations, which wouldn't be correct.

If that wasn't their implication, then fine. It was just a misunderstanding.

I understand the definition, I'm just saying in the common vernacular here in Atlanta, nobody says "I'm taking public transportation" when they're hoping on Greyhound or Delta. "I'm taking public transportation" in common usage in our city means you are hopping on MARTA--either the bus or the train.

Greyhound in our area suffers from some of the same reputation problems as MARTA in terms of cleanliness and safety--and I believe that's because they are both in low demand. I'm not saying the negative reputation is totally deserved in either case. However, no doubt when long-distance bus lines were more popular and the business was more profitable in our area, the bus stations were cleaner, nicer, safer, and there was more competition among lines in the Southeast.

Nope, I'm referring to our design of public transit and public spaces, whatever the ownership. Go to other countries--Mexico, Brazil, anywhere in Europe--and the relative hostility in American design towards anything that isn't automobile-accessed, privately-controlled space is obvious.

But it was a throwaway comment anyways and kind of weird to nit over. I mean obviously the Greyhound Atlanta bus station doesn't represent the pinnacle of American design of a public space or of a public transit system. But it is a hilariously bad example of both which would never be able to stand, even in a country with a fraction of the wealth of our own, if the US prioritized these things in any meaningful way (hint: even if Atlanta's bus station isn't publicly owned, that doesn't mean the government can't fix this problem, as many other local governments have around the US).

I wonder if Five Points MARTA Station can renovate and create something similar to Grand Central without Amtrak, and allow Greyhound buses to serve from there. Unfortunately the multi-modal system purpose by the State never came into existence.

I always thought, after the old station closed on Spring Street, that the current Greyhound Station was "temporary", hence the "trailor depot:.

Would be nice if CIM could plan for the ground level (under the viaducts) to be a bus depot for Greyhound, Megabus, local MARTA buses, and express bus service to the suburbs.

Or, just maybe, we could actually bother to build the danged MMPT like planned for how long?

LMBO! That was only a political cover up to take attention away from GA 400 tolls not being removed at the time in an election season. That proposal was never going to happen.

We don't need to go crazy with a bus station. Just make it clean and functional.

Planned, or suggested? I'm not sure there was ever a viable, actual plan.
