I used to go to Greensboro a lot, and there's a high point on I-20 many miles west of the city (way before Conyers, even) that you can see most of the skyline from. At night it's just a few specs of light -- I doubt you can even see it during the day. Being dozens of miles outside the city and still being able to see it is pretty cool, especially when you can't even see it from inside the city limits because of all the trees.

By the way, I'm not sure which part of your photo is a better representation of Atlanta, the skyline or the dually

Here is a nice before and after of the Centennial Olympic Park Area:

In the top photo taken in 1994, this is how the area looked prior to redevelopment. It was filled with nothing but old factories, abandonded warehouses, and empty lots. A true testament to Atlanta's industrial past.

The bottom photo is today, a testament to Atlanta's modernist present.

What is so odd to me is that here are virtually NO new buildings in that pic...which was 15 years ago. Then you have midtown, Buckhead, even Perimeter that have dozens. It's kind of sad...

Very true - but if the camera panned just slightly to the left, the new Allen Plaza buildings and Twelve would come into view. If panned to the right, the new Omni tower and the other new development adjacent to the Aquarium would be visible. It's hard to notice, but the expansion of the Gift Mart is visible.

I'm trying to be the eternal optimist here.

Nothing wrong with that, and I do not lament the fact that in the last 15 to 20 years there haven't been many new towers in the lower part of Downtown. All of the work has been done in the area has been along the lines of redevelopment of existing structures, residential, street level retail, and let's not forget the behemoth Centennial Park project. In other words, all things that go into making Downtown more friendly for living/working/playing. Besides, there are more than enough shiny new skyscrapers in upper Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead to get your fill.
