I have always been pretty good at avoiding traffic hassles. I try to avoid rush hours, driving long distances, using freeways, etc.

However, it seems to me that intown Atlanta's traffic has gotten worse by orders of magnitude. Several times lately it has taken me an hour or more to go a few miles in the city of Atlanta. Yesterday it took an hour and ten minutes to go from 17th Street to Ponce. This is not atypical.

In my opinion this has the potential to take the bloom off the rose of intown living. Traffic is just as bad on the weekends, too.

Each time I am in town, I am astounded by this very thing. When I moved five years ago, it was already hair pullingly bad. It gets worse each time I am there. Intown is desperately in need of more transit, moreso than, I think, the suburbs.

A nightmare. It takes forever to get around Midtown on Friday and Saturday nights.

Spoiler: Traffic in a growing city will get continually worse. The only way to prevent that is to offer realistic alternatives.

Intown Atlanta is already best enjoyed without a car. That will only get more true in the future.

It is unfortunate that the original streetcar plan was not built; instead, we got something of a novelty. What a great system it would have been! The 2006 plan was very extensive. Alas...

You didn't actually think more intown density was going to result in LESS traffic, did you?

I take the bus on the weekends and the train during the week. Traffic intown on the weekends doesn't seem bad at all. I don't pay it much attention during the week though.

I do not drive in the suburbs regularly, but I took a road trip up to Tennessee the other week and the traffic in the suburbs was far worse than in-town. The construction on I-75 had traffic crawling at ~15mph for 20+ miles.

Either way: intown or out of town, it makes me glad I do not drive regularly.

TNCs share part of the increase in traffic.
