Wow folks, thanks so much for the info - incredibly helpful. Sounds like the perfect area for us, and Oakhurst seems like a wonderful elementary school. Good point about the pool cmtiger, definitely a pro for Decatur Towns. The Enclave unit is gorgeous on the inside, but it's only a 2BR. I think we'd be happier in a 3, so I'd probably make Decatur Towns our first choice. You guys/gals are great!

Our move date got pushed back a little (July), but the house hunt continues! It seems pretty hard to find a house in our price range in the Oakhurst district that is not in shambles. I want to stay zoned for Decatur city schools though.

I have heard people say any of the Decatur city schools are fine, but does anyone have any direct comparisons of them. I thought I remember some areas around Agnes Scott looking pretty sketchy, but I don't know if these areas are zoned for Winnona Park. Is Clairemont Elementary a bit farther from any "mini-downtown" or park areas? I have not heard from many parents that have kids at Winnona Park or Clairemont Elementary (outside of the greatschools reviews).

Default Decatur Schools

I have kids at Oakhurst, but I know lots of families at Clairemont and Winnona so I can give you some info. Academically, there is virtually no difference between the schools. They all have great teachers and principals and their demographics, curriculum and pedagogy are identical. There test scores are always within a point or so of eachother. There was a lot of redistricting several years ago and the school board was very particular about making the school zones identical as far as achievement and demographics.

Now, culturally, there is a slight difference. Oakhurst is a little more artsy/granola-ish. Clairemont is a little more preppy and Winnona is a little more hard driving as far as student expectations. The differences are slight though and you can find tons of exceptions at each school.

Clairmont is getting a new principal next year (the last one retired) and they are piloting a strange report card that CSD may or may not adopt in the other schools. I don't think either of these things are a big deal though.

There are commercial nodes near homes/condos in each school district. It just depends on where in the district you are located.

The sketchy areas in the Winnona district are probably in portions of College Heights. I have friends who live in the sketchiest part and they have not had a big crime problem. Their biggest complaint is not enough kids in the neighborhood to play with b/c there are lots of older folks over there. I think that this will change rapidly though.

My kids are not in CSD schools, but we live close to Decatur and do have several friends with children in both Clairemont and Winnona Park. What cmtiger wrote below matches up exactly with what they've said. If I was moving to Decatur, I'd be happy with any of those schools.

Thankyou again for the replies, especially the very thorough one from cmtiger. Any other opinions from people that live in some of these areas are quite welcome.
