I wonder if that statistic takes in the massive pine farms in SE GA. They could be considered forest.

Those pine forests were cotton fields love ...and lots of trees were harvested for lumber, ship-building, turpentine, fuel for steam engines. Ever notice how barren the landscape is in old photos from the Civil War?

I like how many timber companies aren't doing a complete clear cut in many areas. My mom had timber cut on her 120 acres in Meriwether a few years back. They only took pines of a certain diameter and didn't touch any hardwoods. I was so worried her land would look like a war zone, but it looked like it just had a nice thinning.

The pine farms are still actively cultivated. They are harvested and planted in 50 year cycles. They're about all you see driving down 341 from Hazlehurst to Brunswick.

If grown for timber, normally a 30 to 35 year cycle. If for pulp, as short as 10 to 15.

Yes we want our Urban utopia as long as we get rent controlled apartments and single zone taxi rides are kept below $25. Taxes are too low too so this will help out with that problem! Lets make all freeways toll roads so people have to ride Marta!

I've lost 4 good sized to large pines. As best as I could count, one was from the 1920s. Another nearly as old. The other two were more recent.

Tropical storms are the enemy of hardwoods; ice storms are the enemy of pines.
