We will be arriving in Atlanta very late (wee hours of the morning actually) and looking for a safe place to spend one night in a hotel south of the Airport. Safety is our primary concern...we were thinking of driving a little south of the airport, maybe to Fairburn to avoid the ATL traffic the next morning. Are the hotels off I85 safe for a late night arrival or should we just plan to stay near the airport? Any suggestions much appreciated!

There are several hotels around Exit 61 on I-85 that should be fine. They're all your typical chains and in the direction of PTC once you get off the interstate.

What's your final destination, if you don't mind me asking?

Hotel Solis by the Porsche America headquarters in Hapeville. One of the top luxury hotels in Atlanta.

If you are flying into the Atlanta Airport and will have to fly back out of the airport the next day, your most convenient option might be to take the Atlanta SkyTrain from the Domestic Terminal over to the GICC (Georgia International Convention Center) Gateway and stay at one of the 3 surrounding hotels that are immediately adjacent to the station.

There are also large clusters of hotels that service the Atlanta Airport area at and around the Exit 73 (Virginia Avenue) and Exit 70 (GA 139 Riverdale Road) interchanges off of Interstate 85.

Otherwise, if you will be driving into and out of the Atlanta area, there are multiple roadside hotels of good quality at and around the Exit 61 (GA 74) interchange off of I-85 in South Fulton County, like citidata18 noted.

Thanks! Exit 61 is the Fairburn exit, I think? That's the location I was considering, but just wasn't sure about safety since it will be a late arrival. Yes, will be driving, though arriving after midnight.

Yes, Exit 61 is the exit off of I-85 South to Georgia Highway 74 which is the Fairburn/Peachtree City exit.

The Fairburn / Peachtree City exit off I-85 is absolutely 100 percent safe

I've stayed at the Drury Inn and it felt safe

The Marriott Gateway near the Airport Convention Center is nice and safe, but can be pricey. I have stayed there for numerous work meetings. The Renaissance at the airport is a good option too.

If you are heading south, then exit 61 (Fairburn/Peachtree City exit) is a good option. It's about 7 miles south of the airport. I've had family stay at the Wingate before. It's fairly new. There is also a Fairfield and Hampton Inn at that exit. There is some petty crime in that area, but it's fairly safe, and there are a lot of new chain restaurants popping up around that exit.

If Peachtree City is your ultimate destination ... might as well just go ahead and drive to a hotel in PTC.
