I feel like this has been discussed before but I can't find the post. My apologies if this has already been covered.

In any event, this struck me as interesting. If you ask me, "Druid Hills" was a good choice. It's certainly better than "New Dorp" or "Goodwood."

Are there any that you would have preferred?

ELECTRIC POWER LINES
The Library of Congress, Manuscript Division
Olmsted Associates Papers, Series B - Job File #00071
9th April, 1902
To Joel Hurt
Speaking of electric light wires, it would certainly be very advisable to reserve in the
deeds of the lots the right to locate and maintain a line of poles along the rear boundary,
and the right of access to the same for alterations, additions, and repairs. This would
relieve the streets of a very ugly feature.

Would that the city had stuck to this mode of development.

The city abandoned the alleys in the 80's, too costly to maintain both alleys and streets, when utilities could be located along the street allowing for easier access.

Interesting find Arjay. Some of those names do carry a dated feel but for the most part whatever they named it would have carried the panache of the neighborhood and name association would have modified in our minds. But I agree there are some whoppers in there. New Dorp? What is a dorp? And Goodwood too. At my age, that term has a whole 'nother meaning.

Every time I hear that name I can't help but think of Celtic Druids.

No doubt that's what they were trying to evoke. A number of other names on the list also have a Celtic/British air. Braehurst, Bonnie Brae, Stratford, Merrymount, etc.

Atlanta is not the only city with a neighborhood named Druid Hills. Birmingham and Charlotte have their own less exalted versions.
