It is sad, and I can't help but think we are making a major mistake for the long term.

Trains and airplanes happily co-exist in many parts of the world. Why not bring some balance to the system here in les Etats-Unis?

Not to mention the airlines. I don't think Delta would cotton to mega billions in public money being diverted to create a transportation system that was in direct competition with them.

Don't really care about Charlotte, but lines that ran through Macon to Savannah and through Newnan/LaGrange to Columbus would be nice.

Yep.

It really would be nice if you could hop on a fast train at 3 in the afternoon and be on the coast two hours later. How European would that be?

Too European to be American, and most Americans don't want that because America is the greatest country in the world and it is perfect the way it is. They don't want to be like those sissy socialist Europeans, lol.

All kidding aside, some firsthand experience with the European rail systems would go a long way towards selling these particular Americans on the idea.
