I thought this was a pretty good website for recommendations on local services.

Have they gone away completely? Is there anything similar out there?

Kudzu never goes away.

But there's a whole lot less than 20 years ago.

My sites rarely got any traffic from Kudzu.com. I usually recommend Best Pick Reports for local services. They don't charge the service provider by job like the other more popular companies do that advertise all over. One carpenter affiliated with one of them told me that his company charged the service provider for both good and bad leads alike. Another one said that their company kept around 64% of the fee charged to the customer.

But those are the companies that are still around and they seem to serve a purpose. Trying to find a decent independent handy person recently for a few tasks around our house was an exercise in futility. Found one one on NextDoor that worked out OK. But what a pain!

Yelp or Google reviews work similarly.
