Support to curb future city financing of private enterprise seems to be growing, and has found a new voice in APS.

As angry as Bottoms appears to be over this resolution, she had to see this coming.

My feelings are largely reflected in the statement made by Mr. Martin before the Board yesterday.

"The only resident who addressed the school board Friday supported its action. James Martin of Berkeley Park said there are too many ways tax dollars intended for education are diverted for other purposes, “and I think that this is a good and necessary first step toward seeing to it that those are overseen better by our elected officials.”

I tend to favor keeping government out of picking winners and losers.

I agree.

I also think its clear that economic development is not one of the roles of school districts. So they shouldn't give away tax dollars to promote economic development.

I can't quite fathom it either, and don't really understand how Mayor Bottoms does.

Good for APS.

I am sick and tired of these corporations and Private Equity firms making out like bandits on the taxpayer's dime.

And at best, the taxpayer gets nothing but crappy part-time $9-an-hour jobs from these gentrified crap-shows.

The diversion of funds earmarked for education and justified by the "good of the community" argument is what galls me the most. What next if you're going to use that broad an argument?

Yeah I think there needs to be a major societal-wide revisiting of what a "public-good" or "Good of the community" development project is suppose to be.

Because all I have seen so far...is corporations and private equity firms pricing people out of their neighborhoods and bringing in jobs that would hardly constitute a living wage.

A lot of these public-private partnerships in the last decade or so...seem to end up as more pathogenic than symbiotic relationships, where the taxpayer is concerned.

Whatever happened to the day when businesses made location decisions based on business, instead of how many zillions they could get local government to dole out?

You guys just noticing this? Kasim Reed started this method of public financing and KLB is continuing it with her half-witted administration. This is why Atlanta average working class income citizen keeps losing and getting pushed out or close to being pushed out of the jurisdiction to the suburbs or out of the region altogether.
