Fulton schools is considering cutting millions off its budget next year due to a projected budget shortfall caused in part by an expected decrease in property tax revenue.

Fulton projects the budget for the 2019-2020 school year could have a gap of between $44 million and $56 million. The district presented options that would shave $15.5 million off the budget at the school board’s Jan. 8 non-voting work session. The proposal will next be heard at the board’s Jan. 17 meeting..."

How can they expect the school system to get by on $1,650,000,000 rather than $1,700,000,000?

It has been on the agenda for over two years. Remember the drama started from Fulton tried to raise its property assessment for two years (failed in 2017 but succeeded in 2018). However, because the dramatic raises in 2018, residents started initiatives to cap annual property tax increases and roll back increases in 2018.

Should Fulton have reacted responsively, it should not spent all the one time boosts it got in 2018. However, the county took a gamble assuming it will be politically hard to cut back. Now it cries for shortfall??

I guess the next step will be dramatical cut or furlough teachers instead of cutting administrative costs.
