I wouldn't take "must be seen" literally. I have seen PTC and it wasn't a life changing event.

That being said, I found it rather chilling that they would couple a city (NYC) that is poised to celebrate World Pride (accompanied by a photo of the Stonewall Inn) with one that was home to one of the most heinous LGBT hate crimes in recent history (Laramie, WY).

2019 is also the 60th anniversary of PTC’s incorporation in 1959 ... a fact the story fails to mention.

Yeah, this was surprising when I saw posted on Facebook. I thought it was a joke or potentially one of those sites that pull your zip code when you're looking at it, and puts your town on the list. Don't get me wrong, I love living in Peachtree City, I just don't think of it as a must see tourist destination.

Well ... it was a VERY slow start. The population in 1970 (11 years after incorporating) was only 793. And then the whole project went bankrupt in the 1970s. My mother graduated from Fayette County High in 1955 and remembers when “investors” were secretly buying up hundreds of acres of land in western Fayette County to build a “new town.” Nobody thought it would ever really happen, and they were almost right.

This is so weird... I almost bought a house there but to be honest after living in other parts of ATL I am trying to find ways to minimize visiting PTC ever again.

BTW ... If you want to see what the “original” PTC neighborhoods of the 1960s looked like, just drive down Hippocket and Willow roads south of City Hall and the First Baptist Church. Many of the houses are shockingly dated, and some are just downright trashy.

Several years ago I suggested to a city official that the whole original area of PTC be designated an historic area or at least given protective status of some sort. They told me I was crazy.

It's amazing what wonders white flight combined with the real estste bubble did for so many formerly rural communities during the 1980s - 2000s.

ALSO ... though it’s not very well known about outside PTC ... the city does, in fact, have a tourism industry. The Peachtree City Hotel & Confernce Center originally opened in the late 1980s as the PTC Sheraton Conference Center and was later converted to the PTC Wyndham Hotel and Conference Center. It has been expanded and remodeled at least 3 times and I’ve attended numerous events (including 2 high school reunions) there over the years.

The Peachtree City South / Atlanta Crowne Royal Hotel and Conference Center was originally built as the corporate training facilty for Pitney Bowes and was eventually transformed into a hotel and conference center owned by the Marriott Corp. This is the facility that Great Wolfe Lodge wanted to turn into a water park resort before the city council rejected the plan. Great Wolfe moved further down I-85 and now operates a destination resort in LaGrange.

Further, in addition to conferences and meetings, PTC has a thriving amateur sports tourism business. The city’s numerous athletic venues, including the professional grade PTC Tennis Center, golf courses, soccer fields, lakes and professional touring shows drawn to the Fred Brown Amphteater, draw thousands of visitors to Fayette County every year.
