It might be time to make these things flat-out illegal to use on city streets.

How many lives must be lost before Atlanta comes to its senses?

I get the argument against the dockless aspects of these, but riders using these are not much different than bikers, pedestrians, or any other "active" mode of transportation. We need to make some serious infrastructure and policy changes to address our ever increasing rate of pedestrian deaths on the roads. Blaming the scooter really isn't addressing the root issue.

Scooters are not to blame, but the inaction by City Hall on implementing plans for safe streets. Both W Lake and W Peachtree have plans to make the streets safer for all modes of transportation that have either not been implemented or reduced in scope. W Lake is on Cycle Atlanta 2.0 Plan: https://transportationplanatl.blob.c...dfi7Gp2jw89bgQ
W Peachtree was planned for Complete Street project under Renew Atlanta/TSPLOST, but was reduced to design-only with reprioritization and rebaslining: https://renewatlantabond.com/wp-cont...19-8.5by11.pdf
People continue to die on Atlanta streets and City Hall continues to do nothing.

How many people have died driving, cycling, and walking? We should probably ban those modes as well.

26 drivers died over 4th of July weekend in Georgia alone.

26.

Alternative transportation fatalities and injuries numbers can be lowered through a combination of better road infrastructure, more awareness from drivers, and more defensive approaches by riders. Hard to legislate those last 2, but the City of Atlanta can have a direct impact on the first one.

We need more mass transit. Less ****ing cars. Our city needs to end its love affair with vehicles! Stop adding lanes, it does nothing but create more problems.

If 26 people would have been shot and died over 4th of July weekend, there would be mass outcry. Unfortunately vehicle fatalities are seen as business as usual.

That's a great point, cq.

I agree. Cars are dangerous and should be banned from streets. Large deadly vehicles like cars and busses should be separated from people on foot, bike, and scooter. At least that way cars are only a danger to other cars.

Sounds like this triggering city council to get more serious about complete streets too: https://atlanta.curbed.com/2019/7/19...mplete-streets

Make sure you read the details. 26 were reported for the July 4 weekend, but that accounted for five days worth:

Quote:
From July 3 through Sunday night, Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated 513 traffic crashes resulting in 307 injuries and 17 fatalities. Local agencies, including Atlanta, Cobb County, Gwinnett County and Clayton County police, investigated an additional nine traffic deaths.
That comes to 5.2 a day, or an annualized 1,898. That's about 25% higher than a normal on a very heavy driving weekend. Yes, it's definitely not a good number, but it's not completely out of normalcy. Also worth noting that one crash alone accounted for seven after a family drifted across the interstate median into oncoming lanes (I thought this was mostly protected).

Stop adding lanes where? We've added a few toll lanes in the last few years. That's pretty much it for the last 25 years.
