A Marietta city councilwoman found out from a New York Post newspaper article what many of us in metro Atlanta had long suspected and even already known but could not necessarily prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, which is that the City of New York has long had a program that paid to ship its homeless population to other metro areas and states around the nation, including metro Atlanta.

Marietta city Councilwoman Michelle Cooper found out that her city had been a recipient of New York City's homeless relocation program along with at least 11 other cities in metro Atlanta.

New York has basically been making (and apparently continues to make) its homeless problem, Atlanta's homeless problem by exporting its homeless population to Atlanta and other metros and jurisdictions around the country.
Quote:
Marietta City Councilwoman Michelle Cooper Kelly said at the City Council’s Nov. 26 work session that she was “astonished” when she read a recent article in The New York Post that cited city records indicate New York City has sent homeless families to 373 cities around the country including Marietta, Kennesaw and Smyrna.

According to the Post report, two homeless New York residents have been sent to Smyrna, while Marietta and Kennesaw have received one each. Other metro cities where New York’s homeless were relocated include Atlanta, East Point, Decatur, Stone Mountain, Alpharetta, Loganville, Lilburn, Lawrenceville and Riverdale.

The NYC homeless exportation program that is being described (which NYC officials will only to admit to having been in effect since 2017) appears to be just the most recent incarnation of that homeless exportation program which many strongly suspect has been in effect since about 1994 when then newly-elected NYC Mayor Rudi Giuliani led an (at times controversial) effort to bring down then sky-high crime rates and improve quality-of-life in the city... It is just that officials in recipient cities and metros like Atlanta could never seem to prove with hard evidence that NYC was sending them their homeless population.

In November, CBS46 Atlanta reported that there are other cities and states around the country that have similar programs and that metro Atlanta was the leading destination for homeless people to be shipped to by officials in other parts of the country.

Cliffs: One family gets sent to Marietta (literally) and given free rent for a year by NYC and people get really upset.

Yep. We've got plenty of good jobs down here. We'll put these folks back to work and they'll be on their feet well within that year.

This has been going on for decades and in many cities. NYC has possibly the least bad of these programs.

Here's an article from 2017 we probably read and then forgot.

I see no reason why the destination should be notified that people are on their way to some city. We don't require medieval travel and residency permits for American citizens whatever their reason for travel.
I only object to those programs in which people who have been arrested are forcibly relocated rather than jailed.
If there's some crime, then they need to be in jail, and if there's no crime, then they need to be free.
I haven't heard of any for a long time but would not be surprised if it's still happening somewhere.

That may be the case but note that the linked article explained that the policy by NYC to ship out it's homeless population appears to have begun way back in 1994 under the guidance of then Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Now there's a real joker and fraud if one wants to throw around labels!
