Which neighborhoods get the thumbs up as far as a nice place for a young family of limited means to live in the city of Atlanta? I'm still looking for apartments right now, but within the next month, I have to have a definite area in mind. I found a couple of places in Decatur, but their Kroger leaves much to be desired. From what I've seen, I know any area around Lenox or Atlantic Station is far too rich for my blood. I've crossed Clayton county off of my list just because of the school situation, so now I'm focused on the city of Atlanta.

So where are some good spots?

If you're referring to the Kroger on Commerce Drive, I get your drift...but trust me, it's not the only game in town.
There's a better Kroger nearby at N Decatur Rd and DeKalb Industrial, a Publix just outside the northern city limits at Clairmont Rd and N Decatur, and best of all the DeKalb Farmers Market on E Ponce DeLeon. If the local supermarkets are a dealbreaker for you, check out these locales and see if it doesn't change your mind.

The Mabelton area is really building up which is more northwest of Atlanta, there are alot of good developments that are new that have really taken off. (Oakdale road and Veterans Memorial) and they are right off of 285 and on the outskirts of Cobb county and Atlanta. Some people really like the Hiram, Paulding County area which is more like Henry county used to be, building upwards but not so over crowded that you can't get anywhere. But theres no good access to the highways. But you can find some cheaper houses there.

I heard some people say that West Midtown is not a bad area to consider, but I don't know how expensive it is.

Midtown would probably be too expensive for me, and as far as Mableton and the like goes, I'm looking for something inside the city or on the northeastern side of Atlanta. Right now, I have no plans to search farther than North Decatur.

Also check out the North Druid Hills and Toco Hills neighborhoods...there are some moderately priced apartments in those neighborhoods, and they are safe and well-located relative to the city.
