Cobb County may get two more years to decide whether it wants to create a special transit district where votes could join MARTA.

Just before midnight Tuesday, the state House of Representatives passed a bill that gives Cobb County until 2021 to devise the boundaries of a special transit district where voters could decide to join MARTA. But the Senate would need to approve the bill next year for the county to get the extension.Last year, lawmakers passed legislation that allows 13 metro Atlanta counties to raise money for transit expansion. It included a provision that allows Cobb to create a special transit district for parts of the county that want it – without requiring other parts of the county to pay the tax or receive the service. That provision is set to expire this year. But Cobb officials don’t want to hold a transit referendum until after the county’s next regular SPLOST referendum in 2020.

Just hold it in 2020 and get it over with. What is wrong with Cobb and Gwinnett officials? Hold it during the presidential election!

It's never really too late.

It's never too late, but construction costs seem to rise every year. The longer we wait, the dollars don't stretch as far.

Yeah that's what I mean. Also the longer we wait the worse the traffic in the area will get to the point where it starts having a serious detrimental affect to attracting new businesses. The infrastructure was probably the biggest detriment that prevented Amazon from coming.

I don't understand why the need for the extension of a special provision that literally allows our county to draw a map around the areas that would support it, for an easy win. South Cobb/Cumberland/Smyrna/Marietta would vote yes for MARTA in November 2020, if presented with a good plan. And meanwhile the entire county would vote yes for the T-SPLOST extension.

Boyce's stated reasoning for punting it is because he's afraid for the county roads T-SPLOST and afraid that the whole county would reject the new taxes and reject the transit piece also. But we're talking about an extension of a special transit district option, not the whole county voting on it option which has always been there and always will be.

Am I missing something, here?
