The problem--the overabundance of charter schools in the area. Take a look at the stats--it is a real problem.

It's the same with the Museum School in AE.
The Avondale Elementary school zone is much bigger and poorer than just Avondale Estates, and I don’t think the Museum School is really keeping a significant number of AE kids out of Avondale Elementary. The Museum School is probably just keeping AE kids out of private schools, or from moving from AE entirely.

You could argue that the Jackson cluster has outgrown the need for charters, but it is not like charter schools in the area did not, or do not serve a positive purpose—Drew Charter gave (and gives) a lot of low income families who were willing to put in the effort, an alternative to underperforming schools. Neighborhood probably served a purpose halfway between the Museum School and Drew Charter, it kept folks who had options either in the area, or at least in APS, and it was a more positive option for low-income families willing and/or able to make the effort. *Maybe* the area has reached (or is close to reaching) the point it can serve all those folks without the help of charters.

Wow, this is so sad. I graduated from NORTHSIDE before its name was changed. It used to be one of the best public high schools in Atlanta, just like North Fulton.
