The Atlanta airport plans to expand the South security checkpoint, near Delta Air Lines’ check-in counters, from four lanes to nine lanes.Hartsfield-Jackson deputy general manager Greg Richardson said the airport hopes to expand the checkpoint within the next year, on an expedited time frame.“Clearly there is a demand,” Richardson said. “This place is getting busier and busier, so we’ve got to find relief.”The queuing area for the new lanes would take up Delta Air Lines space previously used as an international check-in area before the international terminal opened in 2012. Atlanta-based Delta has noted that expansion of the domestic security checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson is an upcoming project in the terminal modernization.

Yay!!!

If given the ultimatum, I would rather have a longer but predictable security wait time, vs. a shorter (on avg.) but more variable wait time. At least then we could all plan better. Instead, we're all forced to plan for the 1 time when the security line took an hour and a half (even though most times it takes 15 minutes).

Here's what I never understood..... the airport obviously has a record of flight activity for the day, as well as historical data on passenger traffic by day of the week/time of day, etc. I don't see why they can't reasonably predict staffing levels based on demand estimates, and have a few positions that can flex to security when there are spikes (i.e. taking staff off the salesfloor at Target to man extra checkout lanes). This way they could all but guarantee that you'd never wait more than say 30 minutes (and many times much less). I'm sure its much more difficult than I'm portraying, but from the outside it seems so simple haha.

I am sure TSA has high turnover. Would you want to be a TSA employee? Have they received their back pay from the federal gov't shutdown?

Why not simply hire more TSA people? You go through there and there are often only two agents checking IDs and two security scanners working. Why not use the actual lanes there are open up more lines and then put more TSA in place at podiums to check IDs? The lanes are already there but not being used. Seems like an obvious solution to me.

They have staffing issues, including the already mentioned turnover. Like multiple Federal Agencies, DHS is pretty much in disarray currently from the top down - and we all know why.
