Echo,

If you seek a five star type restaurant, try the Lobster Bar or Pano's and Paul's. If you want somethng nice but not five star, try Ray's on the River. It is excellent with a nice setting on the Chattahoochee and they also have a jazz band on weekends.

Good luck.

I'm late, but I highly recommend Atlanta Fish Market!

Canoe isn't bad, but I find their menu a little exotic for my tastes (I'm not into pheasant, duck, or weird fishies), although the sable/black cod I had the last time was quite good. The caramel brulet is awesome, though. :-)

Just up the road in Vinings is a nice place called the Old Vinings Inn which has a charming atmosphere, and we've eaten at a Brazilian Steakhouse in Buckhead called Fogo De Chao that was very good if you like the type of place where you can eat all you want (the servers walk by with skewers, ask if you're interested, and slice off a piece or two if you say yes).

There's another wonderful place we ate just recently in Vinings, but I can't for the life of me remember the name. :-(

AtlantaPro, I enjoy Ray's on the River too. It's a good suggestion and would fit Echo's request well, but sadly, they have just closed for remodeling. (It was time.) Looks as if they might be closed for quite a while. I saw heavy yellow construction equipment parked on their lot today. I'll miss the Sunday brunch. There's always Ray's in the City, though.

If the girlfriend favors American or soul food, Echo might consider the Horseradish Grill, an old favorite just a little north of Buckhead at Chastain Park. It's attractive, even adorable, and has very good food.

I agree with Jetsjoe that you can't go wrong with Chops (one of you must get the veal chop)!

Three other places I'd like you to consider:

Restaurant Eugene and the Oceanaire Seafood Room on Peachtree, and the fabulous Joël on Northside Drive not far from Pano's & Paul's, also mentioned (and also good for a special occasion).

Oceanaire is technically a chain, but I might not have known that if I hadn't also dined at the Seattle and San Diego locations. Fabulous, fresh seafood and a sophisicated yet fun dining experience. Loved it, right down to the amusing Dixie Cup dessert.

Any of the above, I would consider ideal for your girlfriend's special birthday dinner.
