Quote:
Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (CAP/ADID) applied for and received a Livable Communities Initiative (LCI) grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) to research, evaluate, design, document and execute creative placemaking and ‘tactical urbanism’ enhancements for Downtown Atlanta’s South Central Business District’s MARTA rail stations – Five Points Station and Garnett Station. The Downtown South Transit Station Area Enhancements Plan or Downtown South MARTA Stations Makeover, will identify and illustrate both immediate and long term projects to transform the appearance and experience of the two MARTA stations. The consultant team selected to lead the project's collaborative planning process is Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh (TSW), a professional design firm comprised of planners, architects and landscape architects, with additional subconsultant assistance from Nelson Nygaard, Gabler Youngston and Contente Consulting.

Project collaborators are surveying Downtown MARTA users and non-users to collect feedback to influence the design team's plans for the stations, improving the MARTA stations and rider experience. The survey will be administered in person at each of the stations and is also available online immediately below through November 21, 2014.

Still better than most stations in NYC.

I'm afraid that was true when it opened (with respect to the exterior appearance). It hasn't gotten better with time.

IMO, the NYC stations seem to have more legitimate character and can be forgiven for their condition due to age and size of the system.

It just feels depressing in there. Every time I'm in that station I want to get out as soon as possible. No other station in the system makes me feel that uncomfortable. I'm comfortable on MARTA, but I can't imagine what it makes the average tourist feel like.

Is it just me, or does anyone else hear a constant, super high-pitched hum, like that of a CRT TV (but louder) in Five Points? I've heard it every time I've been there and it always irritates me. None of the other stations have it.

I don't recall it. I wonder if its an anti-loitering mechanism. I've heard of it used in places to keep youth on the move. Older folks can't hear it.

Probably a good example of "brutalism"?

Just repainting some of the old, beige/dark grey concrete to light-grey or white would go a long way toward improving the station.
