Ok, I tried searching this topic, so sorry if it has been asked before. I have been a life-long Floridian, Jacksonville to be exact. My husband and I are looking for a change, so Atlanta came up and the one thing I was very concerned with is State Income taxes. How do they work? Are salaries adjusted to balance out? What are the rates like? I am so clueless on this. Sorry again!

There are many hits like this if you search "Georgia Income tax rates"

Georgia state taxes.

Georgia has a "progressive" income tax system that uses brackets and exemptions, similar to the federal system. The top bracket is 6%.

Sales tax is 4% at the state level, but local counties have added as much as 3% for local option taxes (schools, roads, graft and kickbacks ).

Not sure if any "adjustments" are made to salaries, but here in GA you don't have the higher property taxes and home insurance costs that exist in FL. I used to live in MA, and NH is the state next door without any income or sales taxes. Sure, you saved there, but the property tax rates were double what I paid in MA, so sometimes it balances out. The state has to get the money somewhere. In FL you can soak the tourists.

I moved from Jax to Atlanta (Cumming) almost 6 years ago. I lived in Jax nearly my entire life, as did my wife.

Let me know if I can answer any Qs for you.

I just moved to Atlanta 1 month ago from Jacksonville. Make sure you get a GPS device. Their county system is not set up like Duval.

Default Property Taxes

Apanda:

There is the state income tax, but the property tax in the right county, is FAR less than in Florida. Also, depending on how close to the ocean you are, the Hazard Insurance on your home is less as well.

Depending on your income level, you might be actually saving money here.

Here's some property tax numbers, based on a $500k home. Forsyth County is the lowest.
