This is a massive achievement for a young man like Arik Gilbert who is one of the top high school football recruits in the entire nation (Gilbert is the #1 high school football tight end prospect in the nation in the Class of 2020) and has earned a full-ride scholarship to play college football at LSU.

This is also a massive achievement for a football program and school like Marietta High School.

The AJC recently published a list of schools that possess the most (5 or more) GHSA championships in Georgia high school football.

Reflecting the historical dominance of the south Georgia region in the sport, only about 3 metro Atlanta schools made the list of schools that have won 5 or more GHSA football state titles.

Of course, Valdosta High School in extreme deep south Georgia led the list with 22 GHSA football state championships (a total that does not include 2 state titles that the Wildcats won in state playoff tournaments that were not run by the GHSA in 1940 and 1947).

In a distant (but still extremely respectable) 2nd-place on the list is Buford High School in north Gwinnett County in the outer suburbs of Northeast metro Atlanta and Northeast Georgia, which with 12 GHSA football state championships and a nickname of "Gloryland," has a miniature North Georgia version of Valdosta's "Winnersville."

ELCA (Eagle's Landing Christian Academy) in Henry County in suburban Southeast metro Atlanta, made the list with 5 GHSA state championships (a figure that does not include a GISA state championship won by ELCA in 1996).

Carrollton (which is now officially part of the Atlanta MSA/Metropolitan Statistical Area, but has not always been apart of the Atlanta MSA) was the only other school on the list within Atlanta's metropolitan orbit, with 7 GHSA state titles in football.

List: Schools with most GHSA football championships (Atlanta Journal-Constitution/High Schools)
