Hi,

We need to take a friend to the airport in the AM, but need to get back up to Dunwoody and be at work by 9 am. What time should we leave so we avoid heavy traffic coming back up 85? Also, where is goign to be the biggest problem area?

The whole thing.

Seriously, though, there's no way you're going to avoid heavy traffic coming back up I-85. If you have a way to do so, check Georgia Navigator while you're at the airport and depending on conditions, you might consider taking I-285 (inner loop) back up and around. I know that every time I head out to the airport to catch a morning flight, traffic's backed up heading the other way from downtown nearly to the airport. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it took an hour or more at that time of day.

If I had to do what you're proposing, I'd leave no later than 6:15. You'll probably make it to the airport in 45 minutes or less at that time of day, maybe sooner. That'll give you two hours to work with in getting back to Dunwoody -- and you could need it.

Why don't you take your friend to the Marta station in Dunwoody. Seems like it would be alot easier, and the train goes right into the terminal at the airport. That is if there is a train that gets them there in time.

No kidding; at rush hour, it's the only way you can be sure of the arrive time at the airport...it will probably be 45-50 minutes to get there on MARTA.

MARTA is the best bet for both of you. The first train leaves North Springs at 4:45 AM.

Getting to the airport is no big deal, if you leave before 7am, it would take 30 minutes or so (I've had to do this on many a Monday morning from Northridge exit recently). Coming back up would be a nightmare though. It's simply not worth it. Unless your friend is totally terrified of riding Marta (which they should not be during commute timing, especially early morning) I would do what everyone is saying and drop them off at one of the marta stations. It's a really easy ride, although it will take them longer (probably 45 minutes)...they just get off at the last stop.

Take MARTA - for sure.

I had to go to the airport for a business meeting a few weeks ago. I hopped on Marta at the Northridge station and it took 50 minutes or so. You can't beat it for $2.

I definitely would not try to get to the airport and back to Dunwoody by 9am - unless you have a helicopter.

Actually what I did is I got my fiance up and the three of us went to the airport at 7am. Traffic was pretty easy getting down there, but man was it packed on the way up! But thats why I took my fiance, with two of us, we were cruisin the HOV, it was like flying first class!
