Gebbia, 38, is now a billionaire who in 2016 joined the Giving Pledge, a commitment to donate most of his wealth to philanthropic causes. He lives in San Francisco where he co-founded Airbnb in 2008 with his roommate at the time, Brian Chesky, the company’s CEO. The two met at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), the college Gebbia attended after graduating in 2000 from Brookwood High School in Gwinnett County.

THE JOURNEY STARTED HERE
Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, right, credits his hometown of Atlanta for putting him on path to success

The path to success as a tech entrepreneur doesn’t lead to Atlanta for some reason. Something about its dna isn’t compatible with startup culture. That was my experience after graduating from GaTech.

Brookwood High School area is a very nice upper middle class part of Atlanta.

Chances are that he had a good start in life coming from such a strong neighborhood with an excellent public high school.

FinTech and payments technology has some startups in ATL.

Don't we have a bunch of tech incubators around the ATL?

Why do you think it is? I thought the startup scene was improving along with venture capital; especially if you focused more on B2B instead of the B2C lifestyle products. Maybe with the coming expansion of Google, Microsoft, AWS and Facebook offices here, that will create an ecosystem of spin off companies as well as bring in and keep talent that normally would have gone straight to Silicon Valley.

Entrenched boomer leadership and a good ol boy culture of management? A dearth of industrial customers that can take advantage of the services that tech entrepreneurs offer? Low pay and high wealth inequality? The west coast's tech scene has had just as much success with upstarts helmed by 20 and 30-somethings as traditional corporations. While Atlanta has one or two world class educational institutions (Tech, Emory) and is close to maybe one more (Clemson), Cali has Berkley, CalTech, Stanford, USC and their various University of California campuses.

A lot of people I know who graduated from GaTech don't end up starting their own companies and rather work for the big companies as a coder/engineer/etc. I guess Cali has most of the venture capitalists/seed fund guys/companies and incubators so generally you will go there for your startup.

It's not complicated.

San Fran is the capital city for tech startups.

Like everything else... if you want to act in movies, you MIGHT be able to have a career in some cities. But everyone knows, if you really want to do it, you move to LA.

If you like stocks, you MIGHT be able to have a career in some other cities. But, duh, if that's what you really want to do, you go to Wall Street.

It's the same for tech startups. You CAN do it in Atlanta, but if you really want the best shot and most resources, the Bay Area is where you go.

Atlanta is a capital city, too. If you want to be a rapper.

Agreed. Atlanta doesn't have the capital or infrastructure (legal, HR, mindset, etc) that Silicon Valley does. But neither does almost EVERY OTHER major city in the country (Dallas, Chicago, DC, Boston, Austin). Even

Boston, Austin, and Seattle are way behind Silicon Valley (but ahead of ATL).

Quick - name a top consumer tech company headquartered in Austin not named Dell???

Quick - name a top tech company w/ HQ in Boston???
