ATLANTA — The Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday that fans will be allowed to attend its championship game in Atlanta.

The conference said up to 16,500 fans can attend the matchup between SEC West winners Alabama and SEC East winners Florida. The game, currently scheduled for Saturday Dec. 19 at 8 p.m., is already sold out..."

The currently top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide versus the currently 6th-ranked Florida Gators, two college football programs with very large fan bases.

The #1 team in college football and perennial national title contenders (Alabama) vs. leading Heisman Trophy contending quarterback Kyle Trask (Florida).

If there was no pandemic and if social/physical distancing was not required, every available seat and whatever standing space Mercedes-Benz had available likely would be completely sold-out for this #1 vs. #6 SEC Championship Game matchup.

There sure wasn't any social distancing on the inside.

Yeah, it was a closer game than many might have expected, especially after Florida lost to an LSU team that had notably struggled for much of the season... in a memorable game where a Florida defender infamously threw an LSU offensive player’s shoe into a dense fog that had settled over the stadium.

Though with what they are capable of offensively, it probably shouldn’t be surprising that Florida was able to score 46 points on top-ranked Alabama in a Southeastern Conference that lately has been looking a lot more like the Big 12 Conference that has often been derided a lack of defensive play over the years.

Just disappointed that UGA isn’t having their final game. Kind of like throwing in the towel.

At least the Dogs got to play 9 of the 10 games that they were scheduled to play... With the term “scheduled” often being used loosely and with a significant amount of fluidity in this bizarre college football season where regular season games were still being played just 6 days before Christmas.

It wasn’t the Dogs’ fault that they didn’t get to play a 10th and final regular season game. Their scheduled opponent, Vanderbilt, couldn’t play because they didn’t have enough players available to meet the SEC’s minimum roster requirements due to issues with COVID-19, opt-outs and injuries... Which, unfortunately is not surprising considering the woeful (and winless) season that Vandy has had.

But at least after a season that has been so turbulent for so many, the Dogs will get a decent consolation prize, in the form of the opportunity to play what will basically be a home postseason game in the Peach Bowl in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta against Cincinnati.

It’s not as great for the Dogs as it would be if they got to play in a Mercedes-Benz Stadium full of Dogs’ fans as would be the case during normal times, but only having to travel 80 miles to Atlanta for a postseason game still is not the worst thing that could happen, particularly during a time like this.
