Forgive the deviation from the OP, but in response to gumboula's post, I thought I'd mention there are some really interesting things happening at Toomer. They've just started a new program with the Confucius Institute to teach Mandarin. The school seems to have a lot of involved parents too. The area all around it has been attracting a lot of new residents in recent years and the housing prices have gone up tremendously over the 5 years -- both with new housing units as well as renovation of existing homes.

Personally, I think it's a great thing to see schools improving and I hope that new residents take the time to visit a variety of schools rather than just relying on historic test scores and hearsay based on old perceptions. As neighborhoods improves, the schools improve, which helps the neighborhood improve even more and hopefully that triggers a ripple effect in surrounding neighborhoods and with surrounding schools. In the best of all possible worlds, every school would be great, regardless of the socioeconomic status of the surrounding neighborhood. But in the reality of modern life, creating a great school generally takes parents willing to give the school a chance and then working together to improve it.

Hope no one read my post as bashing Toomer. After the recent posts here and on the AJC-site after the Mary Lin pre-K campout mess, I didn't want any of the Mary Lin supporters to get angry with my post. I have been keeping my eye on Toomer for a number of years now and have been incredibly impressed by the progress it has made. It has improved dramatically in terms of test scores, enrichment activities, community involvement, and just the overall physical environment. Not to mention having a very dynamic principal. I would honestly have no concerns about my child going there.

I am a Mary Lin parent but after moving here and learning about Kirkwood and Toomer ES I think that area is the new jewel of the east side of Atlanta. I'd have probably moved there if I'd known 2 years ago what I know now.

I don't know if Lake Claire would be re-districted out of Mary Lin. I have a hard time seeing that happening. But if so then I imagine they'd be redistricted to the school on Ponce, which is going to be a good school because it's Morningside overflow. But that's just me taking a guess.
