More than 11,000 students enrolled in Fulton County Schools’ in-person summer school program, which was designed to help kids catch up since the pandemic and virtual classes slowed some students’ progress.

Key objectives for the summer session include support in reading and math for K-5. Middle school students were put in an accelerated “reboot” experience, which previewed the next grade level of science and social studies content..."

I don't have any kids, so I have no skin in the game. I think that this should be a thing going forward. When I was in grade school, I always enjoyed summer enrichment and often looked forward to band, etc. I think summers should be for fun, enrichment, prep for the new school year and getting other students caught up.

Sounds like a terrible summer to me.

It wouldn't have to be. Like I said, Summers could be for fun and enrichment, reinforcing the previous school year's learnings and getting ready for the next. It could be much more relaxed and less structured and even include a lot more playground time.

That's your very subjective opinion. A lot of kids need Summer School after what they've been through. What's the problem?

nope. summer school sucks, even if a few nerdniks happened to enjoy it back when they were kids. That opinion is an outlier. For those who are unaware, summer school does not include more playground time. It is two one month sessions that start at 7:40AM (for K-5 anyway) and break at lunch.

If you guys enjoy it so much then next time you are supposed to take PTO from work, instead of traveling to beach for a week (or whatever), stick around town and spend two weeks doing half-days at work instead and traveling nowhere. As you commute through rush hour each morning you can reflect on how much you're enjoying the enrichment and relaxed structure of working through your vacation.

So what is your point, that we shouldn't have Summer School?

My kids are studying/doing next years curriculum like we always do during the summer so they are ahead when school starts.
