It's extremely rare to see them around here.

It is, but they are around - which is why I said it wouldn't be a concern.

I really don't believe "they are around" here. The sightings are extremely rare, like every 5 to 10 years apart. Our winters are too cold for them to survive.

This is Georgia, not Wisconsin. Our winters are not too cold for them to survive. Having duck hunted in many ponds in Georgia, in below freezing temps, I can assure you, Alligators can survive just fine.

They are extremely rare this far north, and they are not 'around' this part of North Georgia. I suspect none of these duck ponds you're familiar with are either. And I am very aware of our climate, thank you. This is North Georgia though, not North Florida. If they were 'around' here, explain the outsized media coverage on the very rare occasional sightings.

Well, Newnan/Palmetto is pretty darn close to Atlanta and I have seen more than a few down that way. And there are ton's around Macon and all over the Ocmulgee river. Difference in temperature between Macon in the winter and Atlanta, is 1 degree. Yep, 1 degree. Avg temp in December for Macon/Atl - 38/37. January - 35/34. February - 38/37. So maybe you aren't so aware of our climate.

The Chattahoochee river through Atlanta is surprisingly remote.

And you would be wrong. You are inferring that gators are common here, they aren't. This isn't Macon, Newnan or the Okmulgee River - this is the Chattahoochee River in north suburban Atlanta we are discussing. The OP is a recent arrival that wants to enjoy the river with his kid, yet you seem hellbent on making sure he will be leary of a non-issue. Not very welcoming, and not at all accurate.

Not to the degree that other poster was suggesting, not even close.

We used to go fishing for tautog/blackfish a lot @ NJ shore before we moved here. Can't wait to go fishing with my son once we settle down. Look forward to maybe catch some trouts, crappies or walleyes.

Has anyone motored boat upstream?

Anything I should know if I want to go boating on Chattah0ochee River aside from wearing pfd and check dam release schedule?

I was looking up Stryker and Dux inflatable boats on the internet.
