We don't get much in return for high property taxes.
High property taxes compared to where?

Default Cisco to add 700 jobs in Midtown’s Tech Square

Quote:
Global technology firm Cisco Systems Inc. is planning a 700-job expansion in Atlanta, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced Wednesday.

The Fortune 100 company (Nasdaq: CSCO) will open a talent and collaboration center in the Coda building in Midtown, the heart of Atlanta’s burgeoning technology ecosystem.

Cisco Chief Financial Officer Scott Herren pointed to the diverse talent pool in Atlanta as a reason for the reinvestment, a sentiment shared by multiple global tech companies that announced expansions in Atlanta this year. Visa most recently announced 1,000 new jobs in Midtown.

“At Cisco, our growth plans are guided by our purpose to power an inclusive future for all,” Herren said in a statement. “This means building a workforce that is truly reflective of the world we live in.”

Cisco says it plans to increase Black employees by 25% in entry to manager levels and by 75% in director through vice president levels by 2023, according to its 2020 annual report.

Atlanta has the highest growth of tech graduates in the country, according to the CBRE’s Scoring Tech Talnet report. Georgia Tech anchors that growth.

The city also has the most diversity of the top 10 tech markets, according to the report. Atlanta’s tech industry workforce is about 54% white, 19% Asian, 19% Black and 6% Hispanic.

The Coda building is part of Tech Square, an eight-block innovation district created by the Georgia Institute of Technology to attract new tech companies and innovation to the city. Georgia Tech anchors the Coda building and planned for the space to serve as a tech collaboration area, which is how Cisco plans to use it. That building was projected to bring more than 2,000 jobs into Midtown.

Attracting companies is one thing. Keeping them is another. Atlanta's governance will be critical to that.

Look at Seattle. The City Council there has failed miserably there in terms of law and order and has lost a large number of its police force over the past 1-2 years. The council went after Amazon to get it to pay more taxes. What kind of message does that send? While Amazon is remaining in Seattle, it will continue its expansion across the bridge into Bellevue.

Atlanta's leadership leaves much to be desired. I hope the situation changes...and soon.

The sky isn't falling. Atlanta will be just fine.
