Clayton County currently has 41 Black women in elected office, the most of any county in the U.S.

Clayton County has the most Black women in office in the US, and they're preserving the legacy (WABE Atlanta)

Since that county is 72.7% Black, that's not a total surprise. I wondered where it falls on the highest percentage of blacks by county in the USA, so I looked it up. It's #14, with the highest 3 being in Mississippi, followed by 2 in Alabama, then another 3 in Mississippi. It is the highest percentage Black county in Georgia.

Yep.

White residents pretty much left Clayton County en masse during the period from about 1980 until about 2000 (particularly during the 1990’s).

White residents made up about 91% of Clayton County’s population in 1980 and made up more than 71% of Clayton County’s population in 1990, but only made up less than 35% of Clayton County’s population by 2000.

Non-Hispanic or Latino White residents only made up about 9% of Clayton County’s population as of 2020.

It's certainly a lot different than it was in the 90's.

The 1990’s were actually a transitional period for Clayton County as the white population in the county shrunk by about 36% between 1990 and 2000.

Much of Clayton County’s white population migrated to further-out neighboring counties like Fayette, Henry and Coweta counties while Clayton County’s Black population exploded.

As Clayton County’s white population was shrinking by 36% during the decade of the ’90’s, Clayton County’s Black population was growing by 181% during that time frame.

Most of these other counties are small in population too Clayton having 300K is certainly the main reason why they have the most elected officials.

It may be very difficult to believe now, but at one time, Clayton County was considered to be the hottest suburban county on the Southside.

When Southlake Mall opened in 1976, Clayton County was considered to be a very hot suburban area that was a major relocation destination for well paid employees (including employees of the two most dominant airlines at the Atlanta Airport at the time, Delta and Eastern) at the then very fast-growing Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport.

That and the fact that Black residents make up about 73% of Clayton County’s population and minorities as a whole make up about 91% of Clayton County’s population of nearly 300k residents.
