Hi. I am moving to Atlanta in about a month, and I still haven't found somewhere to live. I am looking at somewhere along I-85N because I am going to commute to Athens. I want to stay in the perimeter because my boyfriend is going to Georgia Tech. What is the best way to find someone to rent from? I have looked and there are tons of property management companies in Atlanta. Any advice for the brookhaven, N. Druid Hills, Chamblee areas. Also are these areas good places to live. We are deciding between there and buckhead or midtown. Thanks in advance!

I hope that you understand that the commute to Athens is going to be very wearing on you. I have a friend who lived in the Pleasant Hill area of Gwinnett County and did this commute for a year. She was absolutely sick of it after a month or so! And Buckhead or Midtown would add an additional 20+ miles to the commute (beyond what my friend was doing). You really need to think about this before committing to it, and I would highly recommend trying the drive during peak rush hour. Even though you'd be going "against traffic," you're talking about 70 miles or so, and one stalled car can screw everything up for lengthy periods of time on I-85.

Commuting to Athens? Are you going to school there and is he going to Ga Tech, or is this for work? If school, live in Athens - You would be crazy not to! As for the commute, ouch! I have done something similar in the past and ended up having to get a second apartment after a month. Those days are gone now, thank goodness! That kinda commute is just too difficult, not to mention very dangerous. And with gas prices, double ouch!

Yes I am going to UGA, and he is going to Georgia Tech. I have definitely thought about everything you are saying. Gas prices are going to kill me and the time in the car. I do have a place to stay in Athens, so I will only need to commute two days a week. That isn't too bad. I will only be doing this for 9 months, so I hope I can deal with it. I just want to live as close to the perimeter as possible.

Have you lived in Atlanta before? I went to Tech, spent plenty of time in Athens on the weekends, and have lived in-town for 8 years total now. How old are you? Are you doing undergrad/grad, or doctoral work? I ask because if you're going to school in Athens, you should just stay there. Visit your boyfriend on the weekends/days off. That drive is awful and expensive, not to mention, when you're not seeing your boyfriend, will you drive 70 miles to hang out with your friends?

I can't figure out why you would want to live in Atlanta and commute to Athens if not a necessity. For 9 months, I suggest you two live separately, it won't kill you. It's a quality of life thing, but hey, just my opinion on it.
