Blech!

The older I get the more I hate summer weather. Can't believe I wanted to live in Florida when I was younger. Atlanta might not get quite as many summer days as parts of southern Texas, but it can't be a whole lot different.
Downtown Decatur is a heat island. It's worse IMO than downtown Atlanta, even given all the skyscrapers. Both are a lot worse than the intown residential districts.

Even an Alabama summer isn't as bad as Texas.
It's damn near 100 degrees here in ATL today... yuck, but is better than Houston, that's the truth.

It's also close to record heat. The normal high for today (June 9) is 83F according to Weather Underground.

Last summer was pretty harsh all the way around, but interestingly my wife (who grew up in northern Minnesota not far from Lake Superior which is a LOT cooler) didn't seem to notice. She's becoming acclimated to the weather here! Yay!

While it was hot this past week, I must say, the humidity was VERY bearable (30% or so). I walked outside in the shade and it felt great! Didn't even break a sweat really.

Growing up in New England, the heat and humidity, at its extremes, are far worse than here in Georgia. There, it can be 97 with about 50% humidity. Here, over the last three summers I have been here, that has not been the case. When it does get quite humid, it is felt, but the temperatures are lower (upper 80s). That's part of a feedback of course (more humid air is harder to warm/cool than drier air).

All in all, I wasn't that affected by the heat the other day.

August is brutal in most US cities, truth be told.
The west coast, Great Lakes, and New England are about the only places you can find respite during that month.

From looking at the numbers from last year, Atlanta has a more intense but more compressed heat schedule than San Antonio.

Neither has a mild climate.

Weather data from The Weather Underground:
History : Weather Underground
I would point out that last summer was very unusual for Atlanta. Usually we have no 100 degree days although it is 90 or more on most days. Also, because Atlanta is somewhat elevated, the humidity here is not as bad as on the coastal plains. Summers here are uncomfortable but they are bearable. Not as hot as places like Dallas, Ok City, Wichita which often are 104 or more with high humidity. Since I moved here in 1996 prior to last summer there was only ONE 100 degree day- in 10 years! We just had a really bad spell for a few weeks in August last year but it is FAR from the norm here! Here are some figures I found:

June 97
July 99
Aug 93

1997
June 89

Aug 91
(the hottest day of 1997 was on Sept 20th 95 degrees)

Atl has humid days but it is not as bad as lower laying places like Savannah.
