I am still contemplating whether to move to Columbus, Alpharetta, Marietta, College Park, or Macon. I had a post previously concerning my move to Atlanta. I am a family person (married twice, 3 children) but I like to socialize and enjoy concerts, dining out, and dancing the Ballroom as we do here in Detroit. I am a middle-age African-American woman. I have a college degree in Social Work, and I am seeking part-time employment. I am in search of rental/lease property first. My budget allows for $1,000.00 per month. I will purchase a home after about a year. I am open to all suggestions. Thank you again so much.

What do you mean--'Who's Number 1 in Atlanta?'

A place to live?

In order for posters to respond appropriately they will need to know what you want. Apartment, townhome, condo or some type of house.

You might get a better response if you modify your post and place it in the Atlanta forum--Alpharetta, Marietta and College Park are included in metro Atlanta.

In the Atlanta area, College Park would probably be the most affordable, compared to Marietta and Alpharetta. There are always bad neighborhoods that you have to watch out for in the metro area, and College Park has more than its share. But you might find a quiet corner with a little bit of affluence there (you should be able to find pockets of affluence). In Marietta and Alpharetta, you will have to avoid the areas of affluence in order to be able to afford these 2 areas. Another option in Cobb County might be near Smyrna rather than Marietta.

I do not believe the level of socializing and ballroom dancing you are looking for are very prominent in Columbus or Macon.

Irishvanguard: Thank you. Sorry I worded this post without further detail. Is Columbus and Macon considered pretty safe areas? What about West Point, Augusta or Lithonia??

Default Columbus and Macon

The best neighborhoods around Macon are in north Bibb (not North Macon), and the best neighborhoods around Columbus are north of Macon Rd (US Hwy 80). There are quite a few arguments back and forth on this board, with some people disrespecting Columbus and some disrespecting Macon (see GA Mid-size cities---why all the hate?..thread).

You may be successful in finding an appropriate neighborhood in Lithonia--your particular type of social life will be more accessible anywhere in metro Atlanta.

West Point GA is a small town on the Alabama border, but it is scheduled for its own brand of growth, since a foreign automaker is about to construct a new plant in town.

You may need to do some Google research on ballroom dancing to be able to make some headway. I will private message you with suggestions.

Intown Augusta has quite a large African American community, but I don't know much about the social life there. You will probably want to search for a renovated neighborhood away from some of the urban decay (which applies to every metro area of Georgia).

Columbus seems to have a thriving art community.
