It’s interesting that a jurisdiction like Lamar County was even ever apart of the Atlanta MSA. Though, I can see why Lamar County may be part of the Atlanta CSA probably because an institution like Gordon State College in Barnesville (the seat of government in Lamar County) attracts so many students from the heavily populated urban and suburban core counties of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

What seems to be even more interesting may be the issue of why Marietta has its own metropolitan division within the larger Atlanta MSA.

It’s also interesting that Lumpkin County has been added to the Atlanta MSA.

I guess that the number of people commuting between Lumpkin County (home county of Dahlonega) and the Atlanta MSA has increased enough for Lumpkin County to be added to the Atlanta MSA.

Though, Lumpkin County gets many tourists from other parts of the Atlanta region who like to visit Dahlonega’s historic downtown area because of its city’s status as the site of the nation’s first gold rush back in 1828.

Lumpkin County also gets many students from the core urban and suburban parts of the Atlanta that come to the county to attend college at the University of North Georgia campus in Dahlonega.

I think it makes sense to include Lamar.

Atlanta is among the top 10 destinations for Lamar workers and is only an hour away.

Indeed, the addition of Lumpkin County to the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Alpharetta Metropolitan Statistical area makes a lot of sense, as there are strong social and economic ties between Lumpkin County and the existing counties of the Atlanta MSA.

Lumpkin County is home to the main campus of the University of North Georgia, which enrolls nearly 10,000 students. A significant portion of these students and university employees do not live in Lumpkin County; many reside in, and commute from, Dawson and Forsyth Counties near the North Georgia Premium Outlets. Both Dawson and Forsyth are in the Atlanta MSA.

Likewise, many residents of Lumpkin County work at or near the North Georgia Premium Outlets in Dawson County; quite a few commute to places like Cumming and even Alpharetta for work.

The boundaries of the Dallas and Miami MSAs do not appear to have changed, according to this report from the Office of Management and Budget. This results in the following population estimates in 2022:

7,943,685 Dallas MSA
6,237,435 Atlanta MSA
6,139,340 Miami MSA

True, but it looks like the top destination is Macon. I have been to Lamar in the last year. I can see why they took it out of the metro. You can actually see the stars there!

Looks like the ATL MSA will surpass Philly next year (if it already hasn't) and DC shortly after.

Agree, but as I understand it, the new deliniations won't be reflected in US Census stats until the 2024 estimates (published in March 2025).
