Hi guys... I'm an italian 29 years old phD student and an i'm probably coming in atlanta to spend some months as a visitor. I'd like to have a suggestion for renting a room. Is there any student house with private room and shared kitchen or open spaces? I found an accomodation for graduate but is based on private studios. Actually i'll prefer to stay in a student house with some shared space to be the socialization easier. I will work in Georgia tech and I'd like to live in place with nightlife attractions (especially live music and dancing).

I read something about racism. How is life for foreign people (like for me that I'm italian)?

Finally, does anyone know any student forum (especially for georgia tech)?

Other suggestions would be wellcome.

Best, Francesco

Francesco,
I'm thinking you will not have any problems with racism in the area you'll be staying. As a matter of fact, you will find quite the opposite. The city of Atlanta has become very international and hopefully you'll find nice, friendly people. Come... get out and mingle & have fun!

Yeah, come on, you're Italian - that means you're handsome and you love women and food. At least that's a common stereotype Americans have about Italians from Italy (as opposed to Italians from New York or Italians, like me, from New Orleans). With that stereotype in place people here are going to love you.

All kidding aside you shouldn't have any problems. What's your budget for housing? There are plenty of options around GA Tech.

Default Craigslist

Buon giorno! Here is one good resource.

atlanta rooms & shares classifieds - craigslist

You should find that people are generally friendly to an Italian student.

Che mi racconti, Francis (if you don't mind). I think you'll be okay,if anything people will probably be fascinated by you in the non-creepy way. I think you should get yourself a Braves fitted and become a fan of the "Tornado Dorato". Well in my broken Italian I just wanted to say ti auguro buon divertimento in Atlanta.

Sorry I couldn't resist I'm learning your language.

Let me recommend some good nightlife spots for you in Midtown/Inman Park that you would like. Definately check out Halo Lounge HALO LOUNGE | ATLANTA, USA, it's probably the most International Spot here in Atlanta. It's open Mon-Sat but make sure to go on Monday, Tuesday or Friday, Saturday.

Italian Restaurants to check out U Restaurants

Specifaclly Sotto Sotto and Fritti are great social spots with good food and drinks. Beleze is in thier restaurant group and they have a GREAT Happy Hour on Friday with live Brazilian Music and Hourderves.

Enjoy Atlanta!

Thanks everybody for the quick answer. You persuaded me to come there without any doubt. Anyway even though there are "good" stereotypes for italian abroad, like to be a good "lover" or good cook (who I am ) i remind you also the other side... italy=mafia, italy=thefts, italy=Berlusconi .

I asked you something about racism because when i was in London... i perceived a lot of prejudges about italians. But I know that american people are quite different about this.

I found some descriptions of Atlanta very similiar to what is the south of Italy (from where i come) and for this I think that i will not have any problem. For the accomodation is too early... i don't know exactly when I'll come, maybe in september. and I hope to stay there for 5-6 months.

Next weeks maybe I will ask you more specific suggestions... and if you help me i promise a pizza party when i'll be there .

Just remember that unlike the UK, everyone's family was at some point from somewhere else (except for the Native Americans) in the US. A lot of them have Italian roots. My daughters' heritage is 1/4 Italian; we went to visit their ancestral home last time we were in Italy (Catanzaro, in Calabria).
