I have a couple of rings passed on to me by my mother, that have just been living in a safe. Seems like a waste, but I'd need them resized to wear them. Can anyone recommend a reputable jeweler? I'm a bit dubious of taking my late grandmother's engagement ring just anywhere. I don't really know the value of the stones, but I don't want to be afraid they might get swapped out.

I live in NE Cobb and wouldn't mind driving some distance for this purpose, within reason.

I've heard good things about Shane & Company. We haven't used them personally, but I've met several people who have been happy with them.

My family has used the Cumberland Diamond Exchange for years, including my engagement and wedding rings. Mark Jacobson is the owner, and I think they are very knowledgable and reliable. Just off Highway 41 at the 75 Interchange.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to D Gellar & Son. That is the worst store of any kind that I have ever been to.

No matter which jeweler you choose, the first step should be to get an independent appraisal for the rings. This should include a "plot map" of the diamonds showing any inclusions. It makes it much easier to identify your stones should you have reason to think they have been swapped.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Since it's resizing work I'm looking for, not actually buying jewellery, I'm thinking Dorton looks the most likely candidate.

Mattie - how would I go about finding an appraiser? I really haven't a clue about the value of these rings.

I don't have one to recommend locally, I had my jewelry appraised before moving to GA. There are several listed in the phone book, you want somebody who does it independently of selling merchandise, usually doing it for insurance or estate purposes. There also should be no reason to leave the rings, the appraisal information can be gotten while you watch, although you may have to wait for the actual paperwork to be typed up and mailed.
