I found the demographic info from the 2009 Census estimates for Atlanta. The Census Bureau was very sneaky in where they uploaded the info, but after some digging around, I found it.

Atlanta reached two important demographic milestones in 2009 in terms of its Asian and white populations:

3% Asian, up from 2% Asian in the 2006-2008 estimate.

41% white, up from 38% white in the 2006-2008 estimate.

For the first time EVER, Atlanta's Asian population has reached 3%. This is significant!

For the first time since at least 1970 (do any other stat geeks know where to dig up info from this or other past censuses?) the white percentage of Atlanta has topped 40%.

The growth of these two groups has come at the expense of Atlanta's African American percentage:

51% African American, down from 55% in the 2006-2008 estimate.

And lastly, it appears that, again at the expense of the African American percentage, Atlanta will shortly reach another demographic milestone and become a "No-Majority-Race City" similar to L.A., Chicago, New York City.

Interesting info, thanks for sharing. Looks like Atlanta will be getting a white mayor sooner than a lot of people thought.

Interesting info but I think the results are kind of skewed if one is only speaking of the city of Atlanta, since the results include the city, Sandy Springs, and Marietta for some reason. Though I do feel that there are a lot more white people here than in previous years. I live in a rough neighborhood and we have a few white people around here as well, which is surprising to some.

Kasim will have 2 terms. The mayor after him will be white (assuming he/she is qualified)

I'm assuming those numbers are for the city of Atlanta only, and that the reference to Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA Metro Area is because Atlanta city is part of that metro. Is that not the case?

Yes, that is the case. You are correct.

A closer look at the 2009 census numbers, shows Atlanta was 39% non-Hispanic white.

Non-Hispanic Black 31.0%
Hispanic 10.0%

Not sure how people are coming to the conclusion about the ethnicity of the next mayor. Mayor Reed won because he carried the eastside neighborhoods, which have seen the lion share of gentrification and fairly populated by whites. Likewise, the only reason Mary Norwood got as close to winning as she did is that she had significant black support (something those wishing for a white mayor tend to forget). Not to mention the little fact that Norwood was the first legitimate white person to even attempt to run for mayor in the last 30 years. Can't very well have a white mayor if no one serious runs.

Not that it matters though. The City of Atlanta will continue to be majority progressive/liberal/Democratic. In other words, whether the next mayor is white or not, it will not matter for those wishing for such a thing to occur given your likely view of politics. A Democratic mayor is a Democratic mayor no matter if they are white or black.
