Hi everyone,
My wife and I will be relocating to the Atlanta area and are thinking of upgrading our house from 1800 sq ft where we currently live to a much larger house around 4500sq ft. In working out the budget for a new house, I am looking for a ballpark on what I may be looking at in terms of utilities cost.

We were looking at an annual average of $500/month for both gas and electric expense with peaks of gas in winter and electric in the summer months.

We currently average around $220/month with gas and electric and I was was apply a factor in coming up with the new estimate.

Just curious if anyone with a house that size who cares to share their utility bill history.

Thanks a ton!

Depends on how energy-efficient the house is, whether there are alot of windows and/or two-story spaces, andwhat your habits are. We've got a brand new 2,400 SF house, and we spend around $200-250/month for gas and electric combined. We also tend to kep it pretty cold in the summer, and fairly warm in the winter. You're probably not far off at $500/month unless you're buying an older home that's not very efficient.

I agree, $500 per month sounds generous. It could be a lot less, depending on how conservative you are with your thermostat.
