Can anyone tell me about commuting on this road? All I hear about living in GA is the miserable traffic. Alot of homes I am looking at in Canton seem to involve my husband having to take this road to his office (maybe only 9 or 10 miles on it), which is in Roswell.

Thanks for any input you might have.

Bumper to bumper. This is a mostly two lane road that was never meant for the amount of traffic it now has to handle. Widening and traffic signals are still far off in the future, or so we've been told. We live a couple of miles off of 140 in Milton, which is much closer to Roswell than Canton, and we avoid that road at all costs during rush hours. It's even worse once school is back in session.

Bummer, I was afraid I'd probably hear that.

How long would you say it takes to go about 10 miles on that road during rush hour? The rest of the commute is fairly short it seems.

My husband currently drives 33 miles to work (which takes about 45 min sometimes 50 min), so 19 miles doesnt sound so bad. But in Georgia, I guess it could be. His work hours will be flexible so he might start going and leaving earlier than when "rush hour" starts. Can anyone tell me what you all consider "rush hour" hours? Here in Tucson, AZ its 730am-830am and 5pm-6pm. Would you say that they are the same or longer?

Traffic really does sound miserable out there...

We live off 140 and Hickory Road, and I'll sometimes take 140 to a doctor's appointment in Alpharetta off Rucker Road (about 8 miles on 140?). If I have a 9am appointment, I can leave at 8:30 and be fine. It does get backed up, but it generally moves. His commute time will probably be the same as it currently is, but he'll be putting 30 miles/day less on the car and it's a fairly scenic route compared to sitting on 75 for the same distance staring at 5 lanes of traffic.

At 8:30, the bulk of the commuting and school traffic is over with. At 7:30, the ride is miserable. Scenic, yes, especially compared to the freeways. Where in Roswell does your husband have to go? There may be a better alternative.

In the morning 140 is a nightmare - and yes when school starts back up it will be worse. It's just that it is a two lane road and is very slow paced, the evening rush hour is the same. We live right down from 140 and Providence by the Kroger and I never go out that way at rush hour, I go the back roads. Depending on where you are looking for a home there may some alternative routes that he can take from Canton.

His office is in Roswell on Northmeadow Parkway....in between Alpharetta Hwy and Hembree Road..(doesnt make sense to me cause I dont know the area, I'm just looking on a map ) On the map it looks like its right by North Fulton Regional Hospital.

He typically leaves our house for work at 6:50am and leaves work at 4:30pm. Would he be in pretty bad shape during those times you think? Maybe he could start leaving out there around 6:30 am and leave work around 4-415 instead?

That really isn't too bad - he doesn't even have to worry about getting on the highway. We could go up 140 to Upper Hembree Road to get over to work. Now depending on how far out you are looking to move he could leave at 7:00 easily. If he lieaves work at 4:00ish traffic still won't be too bad on 140. Have yo also looked in the Woodstock area or are you only wanting Canton? (Not sure if you have already found your home/neighborhood). But I think you'll do okay!

Thanks! Actually we are looking in both Canton and Woodstock. We are also looking in Cumming, Roswell, and Alpharetta. I havent found much I like in Roswell and Alpharetta in our price range. I do see some I like in Cumming, but that looks like it involves commuting on 400 which I dont know about. I think now its gonna come down to what we like "in person" rather than just on the internet. KWIM?

At those hours he'll be fine- he'll be ahead of the school traffic in the morning as well as the rush of commuters. I leave downtown Atlanta at 4pm and if there's an accident on 75 I'll take 400 and jump off in Roswell and sneak home up 140. I hit the area around 4:30 or so and it's not bad at all.
